Kalasag is a type of shield native to the Philippines. It is associated with Lapu-Lapu, as people believed that he used it in the Battle of Mactan in 1521. Shields offer protection from harm, thwarting attacks from aggressors. In the Artwork, the traditional shield is juxtaposed with the barricade of the Diliman Commune, recognizing how they parallel as guards for the people fighting for their land.
