“As Above So Below”

Plaster & Acrylic on wood
2021

Informed by our collective memory and colonial past, the work takes on fascist oppressors and reimagines them as a fantastical beast of political royalty entrapped by a circle of linked people. As Above So Below alludes to the Diliman Commune , a poignant reminder of democracy and the intrinsic power that the masses hold. The ever-emerging and transformative orientation of culture is an essential component to Jet Tan’s art practice. She identifies the innate structures behind the chaotic narratives of history and translates her inquiries into visual form. Her works utilize imagery found within Filipino culture that assemble through satirical tableaus and irreverent illustrations.
